Josh Ritter and Ben Kweller (Part 2)

MASS MoCA Fest artists Josh Ritter and Ben Kweller joined the marketing department (MacKenzie and Brittany) for a tour of MM. This is a photo log of their adventures.

After dragging Josh and Ben away from the To Cribbage sculpture outside, we entered the lobby and made a B-line for the Box Office. Famous musicians or not everyone needs a ticket at MASS MoCA. As Ben pointed out they make great souvenirs. Our Box Office intern Alec had the honor of handling the transaction.

We suggested the guys stop at the Ask Me desk to check out the gallery guides and decide which exhibitions they really wanted to visit. They were quite excited to see that we offer tours everyday. We made plans to join a tour later in the day.

Ben was so excited about the tour that he forgot to throw his beverage away before entering the galleries. Our security guard Ryan stopped him before he got inside and laid down the law!

Wonder which exhibition the guys went to first? Stay tuned for Josh and Ben riding a bicycle… in the galleries!

Josh Ritter and Ben Kweller visit MASS MoCA (Part 1)

Yesterday we were delighted to find out that MASS MoCA Fest artists Josh Ritter and Ben Kweller were visiting the museum. My intern MacKenzie and I met them in the parking lot and offered to show them around the spaces. The singers were incredibly nice and quickly agreed to let us photo log their adventures through MASS MoCA.

We started with a photo op at the big yellow arrow pointing from the parking lot.

Then Josh and Ben took a few moments to bask in the shade of the upside down trees.

Deep in conversation about their musical processes we invited them to lounge in the rubber tubing chairs in the To Cribbage building built by current Kidspace artist Matt Bua.

Worried that they wouldn’t have enough time to see everything in the galleries if we let them stay, we encouraged Josh and Ben to actually go inside the museum but first we had another photo op with our yellow signage.

Wondering what happened next? Stay tuned for Josh and Ben getting their tickets and an unfortunate brush with security…

To frisbee or not to frisbee

Even though the summer months are incredibly busy for the MASS MoCA staff we try to break away from our offices every once in awhile to enjoy our beautiful location in the Berkshires and each others’ company. This week we got an invitation to form an Ultimate Frisbee team and play against our not so rival rivals Shakespeare and Company. To be honest the number of us who had actually played Ultimate Frisbee before was very small, but we didn’t let that stop us one bit. After getting together a fairly large number of staff members and interns, we donned our uniforms (if we can’t play well at least we’ll look good!) and headed to Joe Thompson field at the back of the MASS MoCA campus.

Did You Know?

A blog from Membership Manager Rebecca Rice:

Behind_Round2

I’ve been working at MASS MoCA for a year, and I’m still fascinated by the museum and the long industrial history of our campus.  For example, did you know that Arnold Print Works, which operated on our campus from the 1860s until 1942, produced cloth for Union Army soldiers’ uniforms during the Civil War?

Or that we’re constantly defying physics and gravity with our art?  In 2004-2005 we suspended nine cars from the roof Read the rest of this entry »

Cool Project from our Former Interns & Staff

Vegetables 9-10-2007

One of our terrific former performing arts intern Jeff Hnilicka recently sent news of FEAST. Here’s the down low on this art event in Brooklyn

I wanted to give you a heads up on a project a bunch of ex-MASS MoCAns have been working on down here in Brooklyn. Included are myself, Molly O’Rourke, Kelly Rakowski, Matt Cassity, Miranda Ganzer, Sandy Garcia, and Karyn Behnke. Also, [former curator] Nato [Thompson] has been serving in an adviser.

It’s called FEAST – Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics. Basically, we looked at sustainable models of food production (farm shares, grocery co-ops, composting, etc), and try to apply that to funding art production. Every 4-6 weeks, we host a local, organic dinner for 250-300 attendees in a church basement in Bklyn. Read the rest of this entry »

The top ten of 10

To celebrate our ten years in existence I asked my fellow staff members to write their own top ten lists for MASS MoCA. Contributors include our new interns, our director, and all sorts of staff members in between. Enjoy!

Top 10 favorite places (public and non public) at MASS MoCA

Joe (Director)

  1. The Powerplant
  2. 4th floor mezzanine, LeWitt Building (it’s open to the public, but many have yet to find it.)
  3. Inside the top of the clock tower (though the pigeon guano is intimidating)
  4. Backstage at the Hunter Center
  5. Building 5 Mezzanine Gallery, overlooking the big gallery
  6. Courtyard C pavilion
  7. Richard Criddle’s metal working shop
  8. Sam Donato’s paint shop
  9. The B&G workshop
  10. The Chiller Room
