Chanel your inner Michael Jackson

Our neighbors at Cafe Latino offer fall fun in the form of KARAOKE on Thursday, October 16 starting at 9:30.  They’ve got TNT Productions providing the karaoke machine and they have literally thousands of songs to choose from so you can showcase your musical stylings on everything from the Everly Brothers to the Jonas Brothers. Stop by to perform or just to listen.

Summer Send Off

I feel like it was just a few days ago that I was writing about welcoming summer, but already we are facing the beginnings of Fall. To send off Summer in style we have a multitude of events happening in the next few days that will hopefully help take your mind off cooling temperatures and turning leaves. Both the Flutterbox concert on Friday and the Retro Soul Dance Party on Sunday are going to be great events but I wanted to focus a little of my blogging attention on the last Moonlit Movie of the summer.

Due to the Dance Party happening in the courtyard on Sunday, Bagdad Cafe will be screened inside Club B-10 but don’t let that get you down. Here are my top five reasons why I’m excited to see Bagdad Cafe on Thursday.

1. Specialty cocktail! Since coffee plays such a large role in the film, we are featuring a rum, coffee and Kahlua cocktail at the MASS MoCA bar for purchase during the screening. Yum.

2. Truck Stops. I recently watched a TV show about the most extreme truck stops on the planet. The Cafe/truck stop featured in the film may not offer marble showers or a Ferris Wheel in the parking lot, but it does have a water tower that was built just for the shooting of the movie.

3. Visit Bagdad Cafe. The film was shot at what was originally the Sidewinder Cafe in Newberry Springs, California. Since then, the cafe has become something of a tourist destination, and has changed its name to Bagdad Cafe.

4. Snacks. As always Lickety Split will be providing plenty of snacks including popcorn and Herrells ice cream before and during the film.

5. Bingo. To enhance your movie watching we have developed a bingo card specifically for the movie that will get everyone at your table involved. No prize will be awarded for bingo winners, but at least you get bragging rights if you win.

Cheers,
Brittany

A shout out to Berkshire Creative

Our friends over at Berkshire Creative have been keeping busy busy busy doing what they do best! Yesterday they announced the participants for the first Assets for Artists program (first mentioned in this post) which helps artists throughout Berkshire County become home owners and/or receive small business grants, training and assistance. Also be sure to join the next popular SPARK event happening at Shakespeare and Company on Wednesday August 13th.

More information about the Assets for Artists program and SPARK can be found over on the Berkshire Creative blog, a great place to keep informed about what’s happening around the creative sector in the Berkshires.

Cheers,

Brittany

Everybody get together

MASS MoCA director Joe Thompson offers this account of weekend festivities for the members of the Bang on a Can Summer Festival and the artists working on the LeWitt installation:

Our annual Bang on a Can picnic conjoined this year with the LeWitt crew…and the prediction of rain, alas…so we moved it to the Elks Lodge in North Adams, which is quite a venue. The decorative highlight are four mounted elk heads, each sporting 18 or 20 points on the antlers, to say nothing of the light bulbs. Under each head is one of the attributes of the ideal Elk Club member: Charity, Brotherly Love, Justice (and a bonus to whomever can remember the fourth). These are written out in blue neon, below each head. Yale University Art Gallery’s Jock Reynolds joked that he wished he had a set of those above his desk, on hidden switches. When a donor is in the room, click Charity. Some staff complaining about another colleague…time to light up Brotherly Love.

There’s nothing like being outside in the Berkshires on a nice night, but we gamed through the rain call. The LeWitters beat the BoaCan-ers to the Karaoke box, with a surreal rendition of Your Cheatin’ Heart accompanied by a squawking sax. But David Lang and Evan Ziporyn redeemed BoaC with some Bowie…Suffragette City, I think it was, in a sort of late-punk/Berlin cabaret rendition. It’s a good thing Pulitzer Prizes can’t be rescinded, or Lang’s might have been put in jeopardy by that.

Opening party

joe-thompson-sam-bowser-talking.JPG

We’re so lucky to have friends like Leslie Ferrin (of Pittsfield’s Ferrin Gallery) who comes to the Badlands opening, takes  great photos,  and posts them on wonderful blogs like Rural Intelligence. It was a beautiful night and our first outing under the Wapenaar Pavilion for the season.

You’ll find more photos and coverage at The Pit and Berkshire Fine Arts will likely post something soon.
