Goodnight Irene

Director Joe Thompson reports on how we coped with hurricane Irene:
We’ve never, ever closed MASS MoCA for a weather event, but Irene was spooky and we decided to play it safe. (During one of last winter’s blizzards we proudly announced online that we would be open, and several people took me to task for requiring employees to trudge to work in the snow…which I confess took me aback. I felt like I lived on a different planet. It might have been a mistake to have employees make a long drive, but by and large, we actually like getting the museum open, and our tough-weather visitors are some of our best. They really want to be here, and so we’re really happy to host them). Read the rest of this entry »

The good, the amazing, the M.Ward fiasco… Summer 2011
On her last day our wonderful marketing intern Kathryn offers these reflections on her summer at MASS MoCA.

Family dinner
The summer is coming to a close, and I cannot believe how fast my time at MASS MoCA came and went. I still feel like I just sat down at my desk for the first time, with a lovely note from the previous intern Marissa. Yet, in reality I’ve experienced a ton of new things, seen some amazing art and performances, and best of all, I’ve met some truly incredible people (especially my fellow Summer Interns of 2011: Porkshire Edition) Read the rest of this entry »

Reflections on Education

Our delightful education coordinator Cortney Tunis had her last day at MASS MoCA on Friday. (She moonlighted as our t-shirt model too as you can see.) Â She shared this blog about her memorable MASS MoCA moments from the last few years here.
The past two and a half years have been filled with many triumphs during my time here at MASS MoCA. I haven’t written a blog since I was an intern here, but I figured my last duty as MASS MoCA Education Coordinator could be to share what I consider to be my “Personal Best Of” list: the highlights of my time here at the museum. So, here goes (in no particular order): Read the rest of this entry »

Artist Spotlight on Anthony Graves of Camel Collective
Workers curator Susan Cross provides this introduction to an interview that our intern Kathryn Amato did with Camel Collectives’ Anthony Graves.
Camel Collective engages in research-based art. For A Facility Based on Change, the collective used as a starting point the museum’s location in the former Sprague factory and two archival photographs documenting a Sprague strike in 1970. The artists employed a screen-printing process (a technique normally used for mass production) to generate a series of 13 unique paintings. These abstracted images feature fragments of the historic photographs which the artists cut and recombined. Read the rest of this entry »

All Those Vanished Engines

MASS MoCA is currently installing a new project in the former Boiler Plant (the building that contains the stairway to Michael Oatman’s all utopias fell installation). This early 20th century building, which early on produced steam for heat and manufacturing processes, has stood on the grounds here for nearly 100 years.
On September 24, (though you will be able to hear it by late August) we will open sound artist Stephen Vitiello’s newest work All Those Vanished Engines. Read the rest of this entry »
