I liked sitting on the cushions in the Jenny Holzer show. I also liked watching the apples drop, and I had fun making the pinwheel and making it spin near the fans. And I can’t wait to have ice cream!
This is such a wonderful idea to open the museum for all to see. There is much to see, and much of it is a mystery to me, but being exposed to contemporary art opens my mind to what is happening in young artist’s minds. I am glad that this museum is here in the Berkshires.
I thought the v ast majority of the varying exhibits were pompous; particularly the pencer Finch works - hermetic, tedious, the work of a poseur, although obviously shown by the right ‘gallkeries’ and collected by the ‘right’ collectors. Enough it is cl;ear how feel. The Jenn7y Holzer ?rojections were awesom,e and I loved the Kiefers and tbhe B eauys. The sturr re China coul.d easily been ;put somewhere else and nobodyu wutl have missed them except the piece onientam,in SZquare.
Wonderful, Wonderful exhibits. And we were thrilled with free day! However, having a changing station in ONLY the women’s bathroom is disappointing. What is a father who comes with his small child supposed to do? And it would be helpful to have a sign in the downstairs bathroom letting people know that the changing station is on the third floor. I changed my baby’s diaper on the table in between the two sinks. Thank so much.
It was great to meet the artist Spencer Finch in the galleries! That guy who thought his work was pompous was on another planet…it’s light-handed, smart, witty …and also beautiful. Colors you can’t name, light you haven’t experienced. Thanks Mr. Finch.
I thought that the art was enlightening, heart felt and a lot of fun to look at. I especially enjoyed the piece where words were projected in a dark room and on the lower level it was hard to see because you were in the art, but from a higher vantage point it stood out and you had the opportunity to look at it from a different perspective and read the words from an outsiders point of view and understand what the words were saying. The art makes you think and changes your perspective. Its a pretty great experience.
I thought that this was really something! At first glance, I told myself that this would be another one of those boring and common approaches to modern art. I was wrong, I had a really great time and got to experience some “Out of the box” artwork that i enjoyed very much
i liked the room with all those projecting letters and words. the bean-bags that are heat sensitive were fun. my dad told me the names of some of the molecules and my mom thought they were beautiful. some of the art i didn’t understand! this place is cool!
Spencer Finch’s exploration of light was absolutely fascinating. It makes me want to pay better attention to light in everyday life. Thanks too to MASS MOCA for free day!
Hi!
It was great! It is so nice to see so many families here. It is hard to be able to afford a museum with a family nowadays. We loved the China exhibit. We have been here several times and this was the best exhibits yet.
Seeing the common angst of the young people with the punk rock video- did western civ create it or give voice to it? seeing how people in China live makes me question how I expect to have space - is this a human right?
The mirror mountain reminds me to not look directly at the things I admire but to see their reflection and appreciate that.
Had a great visit. Jenny Holzer’s projections was awesome use of that space, and hey, the world’s largest beanbags, heat-sensitive in a darkened room, what can I say? I WANT ONE! Also really loved the vids behind sandblasted glass in the exhibit of western artists in China.
the china show is uneven, but the ones that work are fantastically thought-provoking, especially the clay piece, the turtle film, the photo of the hold-out, all made me weep.
i’ve never liked holzer, left me cold, but this is palpable, powerful, sweeping. the power of words…
overall got a sense of the power of the forces we are now living with; how to live without losing our own power…
Thank you so much for having a MassMoCa free day. We come here regularly, but love to come for free too. All the great stuff for the kiddies is great too! thank you thank you thank you!
I had a great time at Free Day at Mass MoCA. Interesting, unique exhibits. I need to get myself a colorimeter!!! Oh yeah…and the black bean burrito was very tasty!
Lovely staff-friendly and informative. Great that tours were offered, it was nice overhearing some tidbits. Great complementary exhibits that were aesthetically curated.
This place is amazing! Every exhibit offers so much for thought as well as being enjoyable to look at. Reminds me to try and look at the world around me in different ways. I visit often and one of my favorite exhibits right now is the concrete waves…but I truly have enjoyed all the exhibits.
Thanks for being here for us MassMoCA.
we drove up from springfield in the snow and we really enjoyed the museum. great art and a beautiful crowd of people. wish we lived closer…we’d come more often. heard spencer finch speak and that was wonderful…thanks for the free day, we loved it…

Hi,
I liked the big heat-sensitive beanbags in the really big gallery. I also liked the apple thingy (and the free ice cream tasting.)
Her mom says — the best comment I overheard today was a girl who said of MASS MoCA, “This is a lot more amazing than I thought it would be!”
